The Whole Teacher · September 2019

ASCD EDAdvantage, offering original resources on practical, high-interest topics to members of ASCD Constituent Services groups, is calling for submissions on the topic of The Whole Teacher with a deadline of midnight, eastern time, on Friday, August 2, 2019. Interested educators and wellness support professionals are welcome to submit original content, to help build a greater understanding of teacher wellness for education practitioners.


Critical Question

In supporting the Whole Child, ASCD promotes the well-being of the Whole Teacher in every aspect, including relationship-building, work-life balance and professional learning and supports that bolster teacher mental, emotional and physical health. How do we champion educator wellbeing through self-care and organizational policies, practices and services that promote thriving professionals in a vibrant, supportive community who serves as models for the students and families they serve?


Submissions

Original content for the Whole Teacher issue can be submitted in one of three categories:


- Articles Original articles of up to 1,000 words are welcome to frame the theme for educators. Possible topics include educator stress and its impact on their health, self-care, serving as our own best advocates, creating healthy school environments, successful educator wellness programs, and the call to action to meet teacher needs in order to meet student needs.

Submissions should be submitted in Word format and include:

  • the article title

  • a succinct 2-3 sentence article description that summarizes the content of the piece

  • author names, job titles, email addresses and Twitter handles as they would like them to appear

  • a 3-5 sentence biographical summary, and

  • a headshot image for each contributor

- Videos Original videos in MP4 (or compatible) format between 2 and 10 minutes in length, with clear audio and steady video recording, are welcome for consideration. Suggestions for videos include conversations among educators and health professionals, tours of schools with a focus on implementation of teacher wellness practices in place, and interviews of local and national teacher wellness experts.

Submissions should include:

  • the video title

  • a succinct 2-3 sentence video description that summarizes the content of the piece

  • creator names, job titles, email addresses and Twitter handles as they would like them to appear

  • names of those appearing in the video (if different from the creators)

  • a 3-5 sentence biographical summary, and

  • a headshot image for each contributor, and

  • important points the viewer should think about while viewing the video

- Tools Original checklists, rubrics and other assessments, planning documents, reproducibles, and any other ready-to-use tools for teachers and administrators that help them to address elements of teacher wellness. Submissions should be in an interactive and user-friendly format, in Microsoft Word (doc), Excel (xls) or PowerPoint (ppt) files, Adobe Acrobat (pdf) fillable forms, or web-ready (html) pages.

Submissions should include:

  • the tool title

  • a succinct 2-3 sentence description that summarizes the content of the piece

  • instructions to successfully use of the tool

  • developer names, job titles, email addresses and Twitter handles as they would like them to appear

  • a 3-5 sentence biographical summary, and

  • a headshot image of each developer

Accepted content will be formatted and included in the ASCD EDAdvantage Whole Teacher issue slated for release September 2019.
