Every time I get a chance to talk about assessment, I’m happy to be a part of those conversations because we have a real opportunity to start shifting hearts and minds.
I recently joined Jordan Lewis on the #GrowthOverGrades podcast to discuss what assessment is, and, more importantly, what it is not.
I’ll be the first to admit that in my early years as a teacher, I was a bit of a steamroller, so interested in getting bell-to-bell with my plan that I wasn't paying enough attention to what students were actually taking in and what they weren’t.
The big shift happens when you realize it isn’t about your teaching; it’s about their learning.
In this episode, we dive into the idea of removing grades to build a culture of genuine inquiry.
Once you put a grade on learning, you essentially end the learning because that score is a signifier that the work is done.
Check out the full conversation where we talk about:
Transitioning your educators from expert data collectors to actionable facilitators
Why giving yourself permission to abandon the plan is step one
Taking the stigma out of asking for help so everyone can sit in the learning together
